Western States Retreat in North Bend, Oregon
Nov 12-14 2009 by Katherine Wallin

Pat Klettke and Katherine Wallin were part of the Western States Retreat in North Bend, Oregon. Representatives from California, Colorado, Oregon,  and Utah attended.

We drove from Portland North Bed with Leanna Lindquist.  Eva Shimotakahara was our hostess for the event.  Her home overlooks Coos Bay.  We greeted friends from around the West, enjoyed meetings, great food, amazing vistas and a little shopping.

The challenge of membership continues to be an issue in all of our states.    Debbi Ricks from California reminded us that we are volunteers, some things can be left undone while taking small steps towards our goals.  Ignore the negative focusing on the positive.  Let go of the old things which are not working. She reminded us, to not worry about those who haven't joined for years but focus on the young--right out of residency spouses of physicians finding activities and events they want to be involved in.

Most of the younger Alliance members want to volunteer on their own terms doing a project with defined times, defining what they will do.  Most do not like attending board meetings.

Leanna Lindquist of Oregon suggested we forget the old structure.  Define what your state and county want to do.  Maybe a president is not what is needed, but rather Vice presidents-directors and committees.  Do what engaged Alliance members want to focus on. Work with who and what you have.  You may have to throw out your bylaws and redefine your organizations purpose.  Have a "path finding" meeting to determine what direction your county/state is going.

Mary Rice of Colorado suggested a walk with physician spouses at the state convention and House of delegates.  Now that would give a relaxing tone to those meetings.

We had the Reverends Jerry and Elaine Steel do a seminar on accentuating the positive.  they reminded us that everyone is a star of your own story.  We fill in the right place at the right time.  Whatever is given to you to do is yours to do.  Pat yourself on the back, you're okay.
The five points of your star are : looks, friend, spirit, money and thoughts.  Say "Yes" to life, love and self.

We met with a convention bureau to learn about planning a large regional meeting.

We proposed a resolution to be given to the AMA Alliance, "Resolved that AMAA Past Presidents and leaders serve as Ambassadors of the AMAA Traveling Leadership Corps.  This policy suggestion was mailed to all in attendance at the Western States Conference.

Chicago’s Magnificent Mile and Leadership Development Conference by Kathleen Alder

In October 4th through the 6th, a delegation of six Utah Medical Alliance members attended the Leadership Development Conference in Chicago, Illinois.  Members who attended were:  Ann Takasaki immediate past UMAA president and AMAA Nominating Committee member representing Utah, Pat Klettke represented Utah and also serves as Chair of the Health Promotions committee for the AMAA, Kathleen Alder President Elect for UMAA, Bonnie Wahlen President Elect for Weber County, Kristine College Health Promotion Chair for Utah County; and Jennifer Sunseri Medical Student Spouse who has great leadership potential wherever she and her husband go.

We had a great time and learned while listening to dynamic speakers talk about subjects that are important to medical families.  We worked together in sessions to talk about how we could most effectively build our Alliance membership during this next year.  Members took part in a brain storming session to come up with ideas of how to motivate members to join and leaders to lead.  We networked together to share ideas and experiences to build one another up.  We had a chance to see what other states and counties have been doing to successfully serve their communities.  And we learned what we could possibly implement in our state and counties to better serve our medical families.

And then of course there is Chicago’s Magnificent Mile where we walked, laughed shopped and ate.  We visited the great American Girl doll store, bought sweaters for Christmas gifts at H&M and of course had to go to the caramel popcorn store to eat ourselves sick.  We wondered at and took pictures of the Cloud Gate, a stainless steel sculpture resembling a big egg, in Millennium park and walked along the river walk one night.  We used our umbrellas in the rain and walked in the sunshine.  We talked to so many nice people and learned many things.  And the limo driver considers us his personal friends.

The Leadership Development Conference is definitely worth attending to learn and grow and get closer to your fellow leaders in Utah.  Everyone in leadership positions would benefit from all that is offered at the conference and should plan to attend sometime in the future.
